Bone Marrow Transplantation

Over the years, thousands of patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplasia, multiple myeloma and other cancers or blood disorders have applied to our center as one of the most experienced and well-known transplant centers in Europe and Turkey.

What is bone marrow?

Bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue located in the hollow centers of certain bones. It plays a crucial role as it houses specialized cells called stem cells.

These stem cells generate other specialized cells essential for vital functions. Within the bone marrow, stem cells produce three main types of blood cells:

1. Red blood cells, responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body.


2. White blood cells, which help fight infections.


3. Platelets, essential for blood clotting to prevent excessive bleeding.

A bone marrow transplant , also referred to as a stem cell transplant, involves harvesting healthy stem cells to restore the patient's bone marrow. The newly injected stem cells take over the role of producing blood cells.

In certain situations, the patient's bone marrow can be taken from another place in the body, known as an autologous transplant. Before reinfusion, the bone marrow is often cleared of any diseased cells.

Stages of the BMT process:

The bone marrow transplant process consists of five stages:

1. A comprehensive physical examination to assess your overall health.


2. Obtaining stem cells intended for transplantation.


3. Preparing your body for transplant through a conditioning regimen.


4. Transplantation of collected stem cells.


5. The recovery phase, where you will be closely monitored for side effects and possible complications.

Leukemia is a cancer that affects white blood cells, causing them to multiply uncontrollably without developing the ability to fight infection. This rapid cell growth can crowd the bloodstream, reducing space for red blood cells and platelets, leading to anemia, increased risk of infection, and easy bruising and bleeding.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of cancer of the white blood cells that spreads through the lymphatic system, a vital part of the body's immune defense against infection. Unlike leukemia, it does not spread primarily through the bloodstream.

Inherited blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, are the result of genetic mutations that affect the normal development of blood cells, especially red blood cells.
